Barn Detail

An historic barn with a foundation of native rhyolite stone. The study was the Shutterbugs Black and White Photo of the Day on April 12, 2004.

A REAL Rancher

I had always wanted to photograph a real cowboy. This Douglas County rancher informed me that a rancher is the one who hires the cowboys, thus the title of this photo. His image was the Bestfoto Photo of the Day in the People category on April 22, 2004. This image and others taken on the same site were featured on Shutterfreaks as a Special Project titled "The Rancher."

The Wild West

A Douglas County rancher (see above) produced this collection of old West memorabilia for me to photograph. We created a still life together, which later won in that category at Shutterbugs on April 20, 2004.

Ottmar in Indirect Light

My Weimaraner grand-dog Ottmar has convinced me that I am not William Wegman, as he hates to pose for me. On this Easter Day, though, he did oblige me this brief moment. It became the Shutterbugs Black and White Photo of the Day on April 12, 2004.

Western Meadowlark

A meadowlark perches atop a ranch fence post in Boulder County. His image was was a finalist in the Animals Category in the Betterphoto March 2004 contest.

Ptarmigan Pair

This white-tailed ptarmigan duo in winter plumage became the Bestfoto Animals Photo of the Day on April 11, 2004.

Together

An adult and kid mountain goat share an intimate moment high in the Rockies. The photo was the Shutterbugs Animals Photo of the Day on April 9, 2004 as well as the Bestfoto Animals winner on April 10th.

Colorful Portrait

Mandarin ducks found in the wild are generally escape artists, since they are not found natively in the U.S. This handsome drake was the Shutterbugs Animals Photo of the Day on April 8, 2004, and was a finalist in the Animals Category in the Betterphoto March 2004 contest.

Young Mountain Goat at 14,000 Feet

A sweet little mountain goat kid rests atop Mt. Evans. The photo was the Shutterbugs Animals Photo of the Day on April 7, 2004.

Karl the Friendly Birder

A common interest in birds drew us to Karl, who shared his favorite wood duck location with us. His image was the Shutterbugs People Photo of the Day on March 31, 2004.

White-Tailed Ptarmigan

Guanella Pass is said to be the best place in North American to see white-tailed ptarmigan in winter plumage. We had success on a sunny March, finding over 30 birds in deep 4-foot drifts. One bird became the Shutterbugs Animals Photo of the Day on March 23, 2004.

Snow Buddy

During a February snowstorm, this squirrel posed in our backyard. He was a finalist in the Animals Category at Betterphoto for February, 2004.

Mr. December

A bighorn ram against our very blue Colorado sky became the Animals Photo of the Day at Shutterbugs on March 1, 2004.

Junco

After a snowstorm, the birds were hungry and enjoying the sunshine. This image of a black-eyed junco was the Animals Photo of the Day at Shutterbugs on February 22, 2004.

Prowler

Foxes have become some of our favorite animals. This urban fox was the Animals Photo of the Day at Shutterbugs on February 20, 2004 and at Bestfoto on February 27.

Homestead in the Snow

After a few inches of snow, a hike to this snowy old homestead was just the ticket. Shutterbugs awarded it the Scenic Photo of the Day on February 19, 2004.

Apex Cabin

This snowy panoramic of a cabin and outhouse in a historic ghost town was a finalist at Betterphoto for January.

Jutting

An overlook provides an other-worldly view of Garden of the Gods. The Black and White photo won honors at Shutterbugs on February 10, 2004.

Caprock

There's nothing like snow to give defintion to the formations at Garden of the Gods. This photo was the Scenic Photo of the Day at Bestfoto on February 8, 2004.

Floating Above

I was riding in a hot air balloon above this one. It won honors in the Open category at Bestfoto on January 29, 2004. It was also a finalist at Betterphoto for January.

Common Morpho

Resting on a large plant, a butterfly graced the Butterfly Pavilion. It won honors in the Macro category at Bestfoto on January 29, 2004.

Keep On Hangin' On!

There's nothing like our local rodeo, the Elizabeth Stampede, for action shots. This shot of a bullrider and onlookers was the Photo of the Day in the People category at Shutterbugs on January 22, 2004.
